In this world of go-go-go stress is the shadow to which we are bound 24/7. Even our sleep bows to the omnipotence of our stress.
When left unaddressed, long-term stress causes us countless discomforts and pains which may include, but are not, by any means limited to: chest pain, headaches, digestive issues, anxiety, depression, changes in sexual desire and inability to focus.
It may not seem like a big deal to skip relaxation and restoration in your daily rituals, but you do so at your own peril.
There are several benefits to prioritising rest and restoration in your day and in your life:
👉🏾 better processing and management of stress and anxiety
👉🏾 improved mood
👉🏾 decreased blood pressure
👉🏾 chronic pain relief
👉🏾 improved immune health
👉🏾 stronger cardiovascular system
So many of us are caught in the unrelenting grind of work, family responsibilities and ongoing, mushrooming stress.
Often, we only allow ourselves to truly rest on holidays or vacation. And even then, our mobile devices drag us back to the office when we are frolicking on the beach.
The truth is, we cannot afford this. Mentally, physically, emotionally or spiritually. It’s critical that we prioritize adequate rest and quality sleep in our everyday life.
Rest and sleep are two different things, but both are equally important to your mental, emotional and physical health. Prioritising rest improves the quality of your sleep.
Rest can be difficult to define because it can look different for everyone.
Rest is anything aimed at increasing physical or mental well-being. It can be active, such as going for a walk outside, or passive, such as taking 10 minutes to sit down and breathe deeply. Regardless of how you choose to rest, these daily activities help you recover and recharge from physical and mental effort.
Sleep, on the other hand, is a body-mind state in which we experience sensory detachment from our surroundings. Sleep is essential for the body and impacts every system from our cognitive function to immune health to our sense of wellbeing and feelings of worth.
Quality sleep helps us reset, recover and recharge. It’s absolutely vital for brain function, memory, concentration, immune health and metabolism.
Sleep is something our bodies cannot function without. Yet we are hellbent on playing chicken with our wellbeing by tuning into endless distractions, even soul-destroying infomercials selling things that nobody needs.
Rest, sleep and restoration are not luxuries. They are necessities that keep us connected to our humanity, divinity and creativity.
When we deprive ourselves of these necessities, we become shadows of the gloriousness that we embody.
Today, tomorrow and everyday, know that rest is not a guilty pleasure. It's the ultimate performance improvement measure that everyone needs, including you.
